Im still flirting with doom metal on a couple of songs, as we did on the last two albums, but theres also psych-rock and even 80s influence going on in the music. Even so, its very much a prog-rock album, just one that touches on other styles.

Arise is the hardest rocking Hammer effort to date. The final track is the near seventeen-minute instrumental, The Return of Daedalus. There simply is no precedent for it in the Glass Hammer catalogue. Think of it as a By-Tor and the Snow Dog for the Twenty-First Century. With the drums and bass laying down a bed hard as concrete, synths and guitars are given free rein to run amok. Thirty years on, Glass Hammer continues to mature, expand their boundaries, and provide top-notch progressive rock. Steve Babb has proven himself time and again to be one of rocks premier story-tellers as well as one of its finest bassists. Listen to Arise on headphones to appreciate just how well the album has been recorded and surrender yourself to an hour of proggy bliss. Arise is the sound of a band one-upping itself at every turn. An incredible amalgamation of prog-rock, 70s hard rock, psych rock, doom and even a definite 80s vibe, Arise will at times leave you slack jawed and open mouthed at its audacity and in-your-face brilliance and, while definitively a Glass Hammer album, theres new found confidence in every note. Theres no weak link on this album, it just ebbs and flows beautifully, although the last three tracks go together so well. Theyre possibly the best triumvirate of songs that the band have ever done back to back. With the Skallagrim series Glass Hammer proved themselves masters of the dynamic and grandiose and Arise gives the impression that the creative skills of Steve Babb have gone into overdrive, is there a better storyteller in modern progressive music? --Martin Hutchinson - Progradar.org
